Coconut

You’ll notice we use A LOT of coconut in our products. We love it because it is loaded with medium-chain fatty acids triglycerides, which is a fancy way of saying healthy fats. These fats are preferentially metabolized by your liver for energy, meaning they will give you a nice metabolic boost on the trail. Plus, coconut is loaded with fiber, manganese, potassium, and phosphorus.

Maple Syrup

Maple syrup is a form of sugar derived from evaporated tree sap. We love maple syrup not only for the flavor, but also because it is full of minerals like iron, calcium, zinc, manganese and potassium. Plus, maple syrup has a lower glycemic index than other sweeteners such as cane sugar, meaning it doesn’t cause aggressive spikes in blood sugar.

Almond Flour

Calorie rich, delicious, full of heart healthy nutrition, what is not to like about almonds? We incorporate almond flour into our world famous Packaroons for a wonderful calorie boost, as well as plant based protein, complex carbohydrates, and monounsaturated fatty acids. Did you know just a one ounce of almonds contains over 30% of your recommended daily value of vitamin E, which is a fat soluble antioxidant?

Cocoa Powder

Have you ever heard of cocoa as being referred to as “black gold”? Known for its high antioxidant content, cocoa is naturally polyphenol-rich food, which can positively impact heart health. Cacoa also releases endorphins and serotonin into the brain, sparking bliss and euphoria. Who doesn’t love a hunk of dark chocolate on trail?

Steamdot Coffee

We’re coffee lovers here at Heather’s Choice, so we chose our favorite brand of locally roasted coffee as an ingredient for our meals and snacks. SteamDot Coffee Roasters in Anchorage, Alaska has been supplying us with fresh roasted coffee beans from the very beginning and we’re proud to have them as a local partner!

BUCKWHEAT

Buckwheat: Surprise! I'm a seed, not a grain!

Despite the name, buckwheat does not contain wheat at all and is gluten-free. It’s actually not even a grain, instead it’s a seed that is a relative of rhubarb. We love buckwheat as a base for our hot cereal since it is loaded with carbohydrates, vegetarian protein and is a great source of B vitamins.

Hemp Seeds

One of the most diverse and utilized crops on the planet, hemp is also a nutritional powerhouse. Rich in soluble and insoluble fiber, adding hemp to our breakfasts helps keeps you feeling full longer. Plus, it’s a great source of plant based protein with all 20 amino acids, including the nine essential ones that your body can’t produce on it’s own.

Chia Seeds

Did you know that “chia” means strength in the Mayan language? Historically, chia seeds were eaten by runners and warriors to help fuel them during long runs and battles. Just one ounce of chia seeds contains 137 calories along with anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats, plant based protein, and a whole host of vitamins and minerals.

Blueberries

Blueberries continue to be one of the most nutritious and antioxidant-rich types of fruit in the world. Their known for enhancing brain health, alleviating inflammation, supporting digestion and promoting heart health. Plus, picking blueberries in the fall here in Alaska is one of the reasons why we live here!

Smoked Sockeye Salmon

Since the launch of Heather’s Choice in 2014 our Smoked Sockeye Salmon Chowder has been one of our most popular meals. Salmon is one of our favorite superfoods because it’s so rich in protein and Omega 3’s. These Omega 3 fatty acids are important because they help combat inflammation, which is one of the reasons that we LOVE it for our physically challenging backcountry adventures. Wake up feeling refreshed after having salmon for dinner.
