Backpacking Breakfast

Posted by on

You’ve heard it for years, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day!” And if this is true in the front country, that we need an adequate breakfast to go about our daily routine, it’s especially true in the backcountry! Long days hiking long miles, enduring sun exposure and altitude, all require some extra fuel in the tank. Here’s what we at Heather’s Choice recommend for a balanced backpacking breakfast routine:

Backpacking Breakfast Beverages:

If you’re an avid coffee drinker, then the backcountry is no exception to the rule, you’ll want your routine cup of joe! Alpine Start Foods company makes a variety of instant coffees (as well as chai and tea) that taste just a good as your home brew. These convenient instant coffee packets add barely any extra weight to your pack, but bring a lot to the table in terms of moral. For an extra 100 calories add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to your instant coffee!

While you’re waiting for your coffee to boil, top off your water bottle with a Wilderness Athlete Hydrate & Recover packet. These delicious juice-like beverages will help your body recover and prepare for the day ahead with electrolytes and supplemental vitamins and nutrients.

Your primary source of calories is going to be a Heather’s Choice buckwheat breakfast. These delicious, just add water meals contain a nourishing 470-510 calories per serving. Each Heather’s Choice breakfast contains buckwheat, chia seeds, hemp seeds, coconut milk, and dried fruit.

backpacking breakfastDid you know that buckwheat is a relative of rhubarb and despite having “wheat” in the name it’s actually a seed? This is why we love buckwheat in our backcountry breakfasts, because it’s dense source of complex carbohydrates and essential amino acids (the building blocks of protein).

To add an extra 150+ calories to your breakfast, add a serving of nut butter to your Heather’s Choice buckwheat breakfast! Founder’s Favorite: Heather’s Choice Banana Nutmeg breakfast + 1 Serving Almond Butter!
